"If it weren't for athletics, I wouldn't have gone to college. I wouldn't have learned life lessons to handle adversity and persevere. I wouldn't have been able to find the best version of myself.
Unfortunately, this is the shared journey of many youth across the country. Athletics serves as the driver, the motivator, the reason to live for many.
Lead Through Athletics (LTA) originated in Los Angeles in 2012, where Director Chris Owor began working with student-athletes in the projects of South Central Los Angeles with Dream Center Angeles Temple Youth Ministries.
During LTA's time in LA, the following services were provided:
As of 2024, Lead Through Athletics has transitioned from Los Angeles, California, and is now active in Texas.
The mission of Lead Through Athletics is to promote leadership and physical activity among underserved youth. Through its programs and activities, LTA strives to conduct initiatives that motivate, inspire, and empower students to strive for excellence and pursue lifelong leadership."
Chris Owor, also known as Coach O, is a dedicated coach, mentor, and leader with a deep passion for developing young athletes both on and off the court. With over a decade of coaching experience, he has built a reputation for fostering leadership, teamwork, and personal growth through basketball.
Coach O spent four years at Morton Ranch High School before becoming the head basketball coach at Austin High School, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the program and mentoring student-athletes. His ability to connect with players and instill a strong work ethic helped many of his athletes succeed at the high school and collegiate levels. His commitment to excellence earned him multiple accolades, including Coach of the Year in 2020 and two-time Teacher of the Year honors. Beyond coaching, he prioritized character development, academic success, and life skills to prepare his athletes for success beyond basketball.
Off the court, Coach O is a devoted husband and father who understands the importance of balancing athletics, academics, and family life. His passion for mentorship led him to establish Lead Through Athletics, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to using sports as a tool to teach leadership and personal growth. Through this program, he continues to impact the lives of young athletes in Sugar Land and Fort Bend County, providing them with the resources and guidance to excel in basketball and beyond.
Coach O's vision is to empower the next generation of leaders, ensuring that every young athlete who comes through Lead Through Athletics develops the skills, confidence, and mindset necessary to succeed in all aspects of life.
